Despite a threat from the president, MPs have voted in favor of a defense budget legislative package. It is also a blockade to prevent the withdrawal of soldiers from Germany.

The US House of Representatives passed the defense budget legislative package with a majority that could overturn a veto threatened by US President Donald Trump. On Tuesday evening (local time), 335 MPs voted in favor of the legislative package (NDAA), 78 voted against. The number of supporters was thus well above the two-thirds majority. Trump had recently called on representatives of his Republicans to the parliamentary chamber to vote against the budget and renewed his threat of veto. A majority of Republicans in the House of Representatives did not respond to the president-elect’s call.

The Senate will vote on the budget this week. For the law to take effect, Trump must sign it. Among other things, the president vetoed a dispute over the regulation of online platforms and a possible renaming of military bases. This veto could be overruled by a two-thirds majority in the House and in the Senate, that is, in both houses of Congress.

Members of the House of Representatives, which is controlled by the Democrats, and the Senate, which is dominated by Trump’s Republicans, agreed on the legislative package on the defense budget for the coming year last Thursday. The design is over 4,500 pages long and has a budget of approximately $ 740 billion ($ 611 billion). As usual in the US, the package also covers many arrangements not directly related to the financing of the armed forces.

Design provides blockage when US soldiers withdraw

Among other things, the draft stipulates that the massive withdrawal of American soldiers from Germany planned by Trump will be blocked for the time being. It says that the United States Secretary of Defense must state in a report to Congress whether such a withdrawal would be in the national interest of the United States. At the earliest 120 days later, the number of US soldiers stationed in the Federal Republic should fall below the 34,500 limit. The design also provides for an extension of impending sanctions against the German-Russian Baltic Sea pipeline Nord Stream 2.

The NDAA is part of a series of bills that Congress plans to pass before the end of the year. The defense budget was passed with bipartisan support for 59 consecutive years. Republican Trump lost the Nov. 3 presidential election to Democrat Joe Biden. Trump continues to refuse to admit defeat.
