Since Neymar was a little boy, he has been sponsored by the sporting goods manufacturer Nike. Now the company and the attacking player are going their separate ways – the new supplier may come as a surprise.
Brazilian football star Neymar and sports equipment manufacturer Nike are breaking up after 15 years. “I can confirm that Neymar is no longer a Nike athlete,” said Josh Benedek, spokesman for the US group, on Saturday. Neymar was 13 when he signed the sponsorship deal with Nike. According to media reports, the now 28-year-old Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) striker is in negotiations with German sports equipment manufacturer Puma.
According to the Brazilian news website “UOL”, Neymar and Nike could not agree on an amount when negotiating a contract extension. Accordingly, talks between the company and Neymar’s agents had been on hold for months.
Neymar is the most expensive player in the world – Nike loser here?
Neymar’s communications department did not initially respond to a request from AFP. There was also initially no answer from Puma to the question about negotiations with the Brazilian footballer.
Neymar holds the record for the most expensive football transfer in history. PSG paid € 222 million to bring the exceptional player from Barcelona to Paris in 2017. Forbes magazine estimates Neymar’s revenues this year at $ 95.5 million, including sponsorship deals.
