Joe Biden prepares everything for his time as the next US president. There are already favorites for the ministerial posts: among them are familiar faces from Barack Obama’s tenure – and many women.

While US President Donald Trump still doesn’t admit his electoral defeat, newly elected President Joe Biden is already preparing to take office. There is much speculation about who could place the Democrat in important ministerial posts. Biden knows many potential candidates from his time as Vice President Barack Obama (2009-2017) – and many of them are women. An overview:

Foreign Ministry

The favorite is Obama’s former national security adviser and former UN ambassador Susan Rice. In the meantime, Biden had considered finishing the 55-year-old African American second in the presidential race. Your great expertise in the field of foreign and security policy is indisputable. Politico magazine also sees Antony Blinken, Biden’s foreign policy adviser, diplomacy veteran William Burns, and Senators Chris Coons and Chris Murphy as potential candidates.

Department of Defense

For this position, too, a woman is a favorite of former State Secretary of Defense Michèle Flournoy. The founder of the CNAS think tank was responsible for drafting defense and security policy concepts in Obama’s first term at the Pentagon. Flournoy would be the first female Secretary of Defense in US history. Senator and former attack helicopter pilot Tammy Duckworth, whose legs were amputated after her helicopter was shot down in Iraq in 2004, has the opportunity to be an outsider.

Ministry of Finance

Lael Brainard, who is a member of the US Federal Reserve’s governing body, has a very good chance of winning the post. Brainard was already Secretary of State in the Treasury under Obama and represented the US at G7 and G20 meetings, so he has good contacts internationally. The progressive Democratic wing could push for a minister further to the left. Among other things, the senator and former presidential candidate Elisabeth Warren is mentioned.

Department of Justice

“Politico” sees Senator Doug Jones, who was voted out last week, as a good candidate for the post of attorney general. The magazine also lists two Latinos as potential candidates, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra and Democrats boss Tom Perez.

Opportunities are also being offered to former Deputy Justice Secretary Sally Yates. When Trump took office in early 2017, she became the acting Attorney General and was fired after just ten days for criticizing the president’s immigration policies. Recently, there has also been speculation that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo could become Attorney General.

Ministry of Homeland Security

Many names are also circulating for the important Ministry of Homeland Security, which is responsible for, among other things, immigration policy. Obama’s former Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, Obama’s former Homeland Security Advisor Lisa Monaco and – as for the Secretary of Justice – California Attorney General Xavier Becerra are mentioned.

Ministry of Health

The ministry is of particular importance in the corona pandemic and in view of Biden’s election promise to expand “Obamacare” health care reform. Potential candidates include Democratic Governor of New Mexico, Michelle Lujan Grisham, MP Karen Bass, North Carolina Secretary of Health Mandy Cohen, and former US health director Vivek Murthy.
