Sinsheim (AP) – Professional footballer Kevin Akpoguma of Bundesliga club TSG 1899 Hoffenheim will play for the Nigerian national team from now on. The son of a German and a Nigerian chose his homeland, TSG announced.
“That has been a problem for me for a long time. I am now at an age when I have already gained experience at TSG at an international level and I feel ready to play for my country,” said Akpoguma van de Kraichgauer.
The 25-year-old was born in Germany and played in all youth teams of the German Football Association (DFB). But so far it has not been enough for a nomination for the senior national team. Akpoguma now wants to play for Nigeria. “It makes me incredibly proud and I am positively excited. I am really looking forward to getting to know the team,” said the defender. Whether he will make his debut against Algeria and Tunisia in October is still open.
