According to the mayor of Nice, at least two people were killed in a knife attack in the southern French city of Nice. Another person was seriously injured, Christian Estrosi wrote on Twitter. “Everything points to a terrorist attack near the Notre-Dame Basilica in Nice.” The anti-terrorist officer has taken over the investigation.
Police had previously spoken of one death and several injuries in an initial assessment. The news channel BFMTV even spoke of three deaths.
The alleged perpetrator has been arrested, according to the mayor. French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin announced an emergency meeting on Twitter, while Prime Minister Jean Castex left the ongoing parliamentary debate on the new lockdown.
Interior Minister Darmanin had warned several times about a high risk of terrorism in the country. That was only two weeks ago a teacher was beheaded in a suburb of Paris. The crime had caused horror across the country. Tens of thousands took to the streets to show their solidarity.
