A deadly attack took place in Nice, France. Apparently two people have died with a knife. Several people were also injured.
According to government sources, two people were killed in a knife attack in the southern French city of Nice. The Mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, wrote on Twitter on Thursday: “Everything points to a terrorist attack near the Notre-Dame Basilica in Nice.”
Police had previously spoken of one death and several injuries in an initial assessment.
The alleged perpetrator has been arrested, according to the mayor. French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin announced an emergency meeting on Twitter, while Prime Minister Jean Castex left the ongoing parliamentary debate on the new lockdown.
Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin had warned several times about a high risk of terrorism in the country. Just two weeks ago, a teacher was beheaded in a suburb of Paris. The crime had caused horror across the country. Tens of thousands took to the streets to show their solidarity.
