Kiev (dpa) – “OK.” The two words about his satisfaction after the personal goal and the collective victory in Ukraine made Matthias Ginter’s claim clear.
After all, the man is already world champion football, even though there is not a minute of action in the German triumph in 2014 and then often underestimated. In Brazil, the Freiburg resident was the youngest in Joachim Löw’s roster. Now, at the age of 26, Ginter is the national coach’s first choice.
“I try to use every day, stay ambitious and knock everything out. I’m glad I was rewarded for it,” said the Gladbach pro in Kiev of his attitude. Löw appreciates them.
“With Matthias Ginter you know where you are. He is reliable, defensively improved, has a certain calm and does not fluctuate much”, the DFB head coach recently described the new Ginter. Even before the long Corona break, Ginter even surpassed the stars in the team: eleven months ago, he hit with a hoe in the 4-0 win against Belarus. In January, he won the fan vote for National Player of the Year 2019 – ahead of goalscorer Serge Gnabry and FC Bayern’s Joshua Kimmich, who has become junior boss.
Also in the important 2-1 in Ukraine, Ginter rose to a protagonist. His opening goal in the national stadium literally paralyzed the 17,573 spectators, who initially caused noise in the times of Corona in the national stadium, which actually seats 70,000 fans. “90 percent of my goal is for Antonio Rüdiger,” said defender Ginter as he vigorously prepared his defending colleague. Even before and after the 1-0 goal, the goalscorer invested a lot in the striker, albeit not without errors.
“It was tight again in the back. It was not our best game”, Ginter said at the end, self-critically: “We had many simple ball losses and simple mistakes in the first half. That rarely happens in the national team.” The defensive specialist saw that his overall assessment of the national team’s development was confirmed. You still need “some time” before the team can get back to the very high level.
Ginter wants to help shape the next major tournament, the EM, postponed to the summer of 2021, as a regular competition. The Champions League challenge with Mönchengladbach should help too. For him, the permanent place and the feel-good atmosphere at Borussia are more important than, for example, more money at a larger club.
Despite the early World Cup honor more than six years ago, the 1.91 meter tall professional only played a leading role in the second-tier Confed Cup in Russia 2017. At the EM 2016, Ginter was not there at all. For this he won the silver medal with the Olympic team in Rio de Janeiro. In 2018, he no longer passed the substitution status at the cut-up World Cup. In Kiev, the now 32-time national player showed how he wants to contribute to sporting reparations in the coming summer. “Only wins will get us going,” said Ginter firmly.
