After Borussia Dortmund, the champions also made a mistake. The Munich team only played a draw against Union Berlin – but still kept the championship lead for now.

FC Bayern Munich made a mess. The Munich had to settle for a 1: 1 (0: 1) at Union Berlin. Grischa Prömel had put the Köpenicker ahead early in the match (4th minute). Robert Lewandowski equalized for the record champion after 67 minutes.

Even if Union goalkeeper Andreas Luthe kept the 1: 1 for Berlin with a world-class parade (89th), the Köpenickers played well and even had a chance of a win.

FC Bayern looked tired – despite the mistake, they remain leader with 24 points. On Sunday, however, Bayer Leverkusen can catch up with the Flick-Elf and become the new leader. To do this, the Werkself must defeat TSG Hoffenheim at home.

That’s how the game went

“It takes a lot of courage”, national coach Urs Fischer had announced – and started doing it himself. The Swiss never prescribed a wall tactic for his team, but rather a disciplined defense. And offensively, the Berliners immediately surprised the reigning Champions League winner at the start. After 52 seconds, Taiwo Awoniyi appeared alone in front of Manuel Neuer, while the national goalkeeper sent the ball around the post with his hand.

Almost three minutes later, after a corner from captain Christopher Trimmel, midfielder Prömel was more on the ball than Robert Lewandowski and headed into the far corner. It was the first Bundesliga goal for the 25-year-old, who won the Olympic silver medal in 2016 together with Serge Gnabry and Leon Goretzka, among others.

For reckless Bayern, it was the fifth 0-1 deficit in a Bundesliga game and at the same time the fastest since October of the previous year and the 17th goal against this season. “When Bayern takes off their lederhosen,” it sounded from the woods in front of the stadium, where some fans supported the union professionals in the fan-orphaned stadium An der Alten Försterei.

Although the guests got their hands on the ball, they struggled against the Unioner who deftly reduced the space. And after a counterattack from fast-attacking player Sheraldo Becker, Liverpool loan Awoniyi should have scored the 2-0. The young attacker already danced David Alaba as the last Bayern defender, but then shot just wide of the Bayern goal.

The favorite tried to find gaps in the Union defense with long ball passes – without success for a long time. Lewandowski was also unlucky for a long time in his 200th Bundesliga game. The Pole, who was nominated for the election of world football player, put a free kick into the wall from the best position 20 meters in front of the Union housing (45th + 1). Alaba aimed just wide (33rd). Union goalkeeper Andreas Luthe only had to intervene once against Gnabry (43rd) in the first hour.

But the pressure from Bayern increased after the break. The hosts stuck to their line, although Dane Marcus Ingvartsen, who was called up in the role of Max Kruse, had to leave the field injured. They defended skillfully and continued to use offensive pinpricks. Awoniyi arrived just too late (56th). And a shot by Marius Bülter was blocked at the last second (62nd). This is the only way to keep Bayern in play. After Luthe had a great reaction against Thomas Müller (66th), Lewandowski scored his 13th goal of the season after good work from Kingsley Coman.

The team from Munich, which had to do without defender Niklas Süle (knee injury) in Berlin, now insists on the decision with substitute Leroy Sané. But the team of coach Hansi Flick missed the final decision, Andreas Luthe eventually scraped a Sané header off the line in the final phase (89th) and thus held the point for his team.

But not only the Munich team left points over the weekend. Borussia Dortmund couldn’t win their match either. In fact, BVB is in crisis. Borussia did not get three in their third league game in a row. The Favre-Elf experienced a debacle against the newly promoted VfB Stuttgart. Read more about it here here.
