Berlin (AP) – 1. FC Union Berlin may have to do without Nico Schlotterbeck for a longer period in the Bundesliga. The 20-year-old defender sustained an injury to his right thigh on Friday evening just before the final whistle in the 4-0 win against FSV Mainz 05.
Trainer Urs Fischer, however, was unable to make a diagnosis on Saturday. “He is being investigated,” said the national coach. “Let’s see what the doctors say.” After the final whistle, Schlotterbeck had to be led off the field by an overseer with a blue bandage around his leg. He was clearly in a lot of pain. The central defender was loaned from SC Freiburg at the start of the season. In the cup match at Karlsruher SC (1: 0 aet) and in the league match at Borussia Mönchengladbach (1: 1) he scored two important goals for Union.
