Leipzig (AP) – Julian Nagelsmann did not hesitate for a second. “That was one with a star,” said the RB Leipzig coach of Angeliño’s famous free kick.

The Spaniard’s shot from 26 meters straight into the corner was not only masterful, but also indicative of the 3-0 victory against the shockingly innocent SC Freiburg. Because Leipzig won standing up, as it were, scoring all goals from standard situations.

“These goals are important during the stressful stages. They are goals that happen without much physical effort,” said Nagelsmann. His team played seven games in the past 22 days. And that was just a foretaste of what will happen after the upcoming international break: “Then it will actually continue until March. There will be no break at Christmas this year either.”

Leipzig is the standard champion of the competition. Nine of the 15 goals so far have come after the balls were inactive. The triple against Freiburg started for the artwork of Angeliño (89th minute) Ibrahima Konaté (26th) and captain Marcel Sabitzer (69th / penalty kick). RB celebrated an inexhaustible win against Freiburg without a win for six matches. “We don’t always have to look good. We won, that counts. If you win 3-0 at home, don’t complain,” said Emil Forsberg after his 100th Bundesliga game.

Leipzig’s strength in terms of standards is due to its high level of exposure. “Standards are pretty much the only thing we have been able to train in recent weeks,” Nagelsmann reported. This special training is possible without great physical strain. Free kick variants such as those developed for the tour by new assistant coach Dino Toppmöller. “He’s wearing his hat,” said Nagelsmann. “On the field, the players can then decide for themselves what to do.”

Victories in overdrive and against Freiburg will become increasingly important in the coming months. Because the RB squad has already been badly decimated by various injuries, especially in defense. Before the game in Freiburg, defensive boss Dayot Upamecano reported with a muscle injury, after the warm-up Marcel Halstenberg also had to pass.

The national player again had problems with his adductors and will therefore cancel the planned trip to the DFB squad. “He could not finish the warm-up and had problems again. He will not make it to the internationals,” said Nagelsmann. The fact that Angeliño took the place of Halstenberg in the starting line-up of all people turned out to be a stroke of luck when he scored.

Above all, happiness is what Freiburg is currently lacking. “Not much is missing to win a match. The match is a little lacking,” said goalkeeper Florian Müller. “Last year we won a lot. Now it’s against us.” The Frei citizens have also put a lot of effort into complaining about what they believe is unjustified punishment. The TV images proved otherwise, to the chagrin of the residents of Breisgau.
