The Champions League dream is bursting for Luca Waldschmidt and Julian Weigl. Benfica surprisingly fails in the third qualifying round.
For national footballer Luca Waldschmidt and ex-Dortmunder Julian Weigl, the dream of participating in the Champions League has burst. The German duo lost 1: 2 (0: 0) with Portugal’s record champion Benfica Lisbon in the third qualifying round against Greek number two PAOK Salonika. Waldschmidt, brought in from SC Freiburg for twelve million euros, sat on the couch for 90 minutes, Weigl was in the base.
Dimitris Giannoulis (63rd) and Andrija Zivkovic (75th) scored for PAOK, the connection via Rafa Silva (90th + 4) came too late. PAOK with German sports director Olaf Rebbe will face FC Krasnodar from Russia in the play-offs for the premier class (22/23 and 29/30 September). Benfica continues in the group stage of the Europa League.
