The US has voted: Joe Biden is going to the White House with his wife Jill. She is anything but “the woman by his side” and has achieved a lot in her life.

Jill Biden knows the White House, where she and US President-elect Joe Biden will move after his inauguration on January 20: after all, her husband was vice president under Barack Obama from 2009 to 2017. Jill Biden was then still second lady, now she succeeds Melania Trump as first lady. Jill Biden was much more involved in the election campaign than Melania Trump. At the Democratic Party conference in August, Jill Biden made an impressive call to bridge the gaps in the US – one of Joe Biden’s key messages.
A huge contrast to Melania Trump
The contrast between Melania Trump and Jill Biden is striking. On the one hand, the 50-year-old ex-model from Slovenia, Trump’s third wife, always like a peeled egg, but above all cool and reserved in appearance. On the other, 69-year-old educator Jill Biden from Pennsylvania, who is approachable and close to the people. While the Trumps’ behavior seems aloof and calculated in public, the Bidens appear spontaneous and affectionate in their interactions.
This is certainly due to the Bidens’ troubled family history – Jill Tracy Jacobs, her maiden name, was a lifeline for Joe Biden when the two met. Joe Biden was elected to the United States Senate in 1972. Shortly after, his first wife, Neilia, and daughter, Naomi, were killed in a car accident. As a single father, the new senator took care of his two sons, Beau and Hunter, who were injured in the accident – until he met Jill, who was then 26 years old.
Education as a vocation
She then wondered how you could make such a family whole again. ‘Joe used to say to the boys,’ Mum sent Jill and how can I argue with her? Jill told Biden at the August Democratic Convention. There she joined a classroom at Brandywine High School near Wilmington, Delaware, where she used to teach English. Education as a vocation runs through Jill Biden’s life: for more than three decades, she taught at a public school, high school, or psychiatric clinic.

The doctor in training continued to teach as a second lady. Jill Biden told CBS in August that she would not give up teaching even if her husband were elected president. “When we get into the White House, I will continue to teach. This is important, and I want people to appreciate teachers and know their contribution.” She also wants to contribute to upgrading the teaching profession.
Jill Biden has four sisters
Jill Biden grew up in her parents’ household with four sisters. Jill and Joe Biden have a daughter, Ashley Blazer, a social worker. Even after the accident of Joe Biden’s first wife, the family continued to succeed: Beau Biden died of a brain tumor in 2015. Hunter Biden – who has publicly acknowledged his addiction problem – pressured his father during the election campaign with his questionable foreign affairs. US President Donald Trump, who lost in the election, accused the Biden family of being corrupt. Jill Biden talked about a smear campaign.
After her closure from the classroom, Jill Biden said, “ We need leadership worthy of our nation, yours, honest leadership that will bring us back together to save us from this pandemic and prepare for what’s next. Joe Biden and his number two, Kamala Harris, would give anything for that. ‘And if I have the honor of serving as your first lady, I will too.’ Joe Biden came into the picture at the end of the video, saying of his wife, “She is the love of my life and the solid rock of our family.”
