Subotica (AP) – The German women’s football champions VfL Wolfsburg have successfully started the new Champions League season. Coach Stephan Lerch’s team won their first leg at Serbian club Spartak Subotica 5-0 (3-0) in the round of 32.
Zsanett Jakabfi (4th) and Lena Oberdorf (8th) gave VfL an early lead. Dominique Janssen (33rd), Jakabfi (55th) and Felicitas Rauch (77th) scored the other goals. The return game will take place on December 16 in Wolfsburg.
German national player Sara Doorsoun came as a substitute in Subotica at the beginning of the second half and celebrated her comeback after a break of several months. The 29-year-old injured her knee in the Champions League final against Olympique Lyon in August. The Wolfsburg women won the “premier class” in 2013 and 2014, but lost in the final in 2020, 2018 and 2016 to their regular rivals from Lyon.
