Hengelo (dpa) – World champion Sifan Hassan broke the 18-year-old European record of 10,000 meters set by British running legend Paula Radcliffe.
At the athletics meeting in Hengelo, the 27-year-old Dutch, born in Ethiopia, won the race with an impressive 29: 36.67 minutes. She walked almost half of the 25 laps alone and stormed up and down.
Hassan eventually remained almost 25 seconds below the old European record of the former world record holder at the Marathon Radcliffe at the 2002 European Championships in Munich (30: 01.09). She is the fourth fastest woman ever over this distance. Ethiopian Almaz Ayana has the world record with 29: 17.45 minutes since her Olympic victory in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
