Imola (dpa) – The Federation of German Cyclists (BDR) didn’t have much choice when it came to being nominated for the upcoming UCI Road World Championships in Imola, Italy.
“We have a number of drivers who have canceled the teams because the classics will take place afterwards. We received a number of cancellations, the road team was set up,” said sports director Jens Zemke of the German news agency. The title fights in Imola will take place from September 24-27 in a slimmed down version.
The German team missed last year’s fourth Tour of Emanuel Buchmann, classic specialist Nils Politt and Lennard Kämna, who won a stage in the Tour de France this year. Maximilian Schachmann will be captain of the street race on Sunday. “The ambition really sets him apart,” says Zemke, who knows the protégé of the Bora-hansgrohe team. Schachmann had also traveled the entire tour before the World Cup.
