Berlin (dpa) – National coach Joachim Löw has judged Mario Götze’s move to PSV Eindhoven as the right decision and believes that a return of the 2014 World Cup hero to the national team is possible.
“We don’t lose sight of him,” said the 60-year-old in an interview with the Internet portal “Sportbuzzer”. In recent weeks, he has been in frequent contact with the 28-year-old who has kept him informed.
Götze was last in the squad about three years ago and was replaced in his 63rd international match in a 2-2 draw against France on November 14, 2017. At the World Cup in Brazil he scored the goal of the 1-0 win against Argentina in the final and scored the selection of the German Football Association (DFB) for the fourth World Cup title. At his presentation in Eindhoven, Götze had confirmed his ambitions for a comeback in the Löw team. “I absolutely want to go back to the national team,” he said.
In the 3-0 victory of his club in the Eredivisie against Willem II Tilburg, Götze scored his second goal in the Dutch championship with the aim of making it 2-0 and he already scored in the Europa League. Low is surprised by the good form of the attacking player. “That was not to be expected”, said the national coach, “he looks very fresh and very flexible, the joy is visible in him. He needs that for his lightness, for his variability.”
According to Löw, the World Cup goal was a burden for Götze. “He had a backpack by the 2014 goal, which must have been a heavy burden,” he said. In Germany everything is always focused on him. With the move to the Netherlands, “he made exactly the right decision for himself – namely daring to make a fresh start outside the Bundesliga presentation plate,” said the national coach.
