Zurich / Nyon (dpa) – According to media reports, host country Qatar will participate in the European qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup. This is the result of negotiations between the European Football Association UEFA and the Asian Continental Association AFC, writes internet newspaper “The Independent” .
The emirate’s national team must collect drills for the final in their own country (November 21 to December 18). Points against Qatar are unlikely to count for the European nations. UEFA did not initially confirm the plans.
According to the report, Qatar could be placed in Group A with European champions Portugal, Serbia, Ireland, Luxembourg and Azerbaijan.
The German national team will face Romania, EM quarter-finalist Iceland, North Macedonia, Armenia and Liechtenstein in qualifying in Group J, as the draw revealed on Monday evening in Zurich. Plans for Qatar to compete in qualifying rounds on the way to its own World Cup are not new. Originally it was about the play-offs in Asia.
European qualification starts in March, the last day of play takes place in November. Only the ten group winners buy their World Cup tickets directly, the runners-up have to go to the play-offs.
