In a few days, Donald Trump wants to be re-elected president of America. His rival Joe Biden is currently at the forefront of US polls. But what are Trump’s chances with Europeans?
If Donald Trump were to stand for election among EU citizens, he would have no chance: in the European Union, only 17 percent would vote for him. This is evident from a survey that the Bertelsmann Foundation presented in Gütersloh on Wednesday. Trump’s challenger in Tuesday’s US election, Joe Biden, is said to be 45 percent. 38 percent of EU citizens would also not vote for it. The representative survey of September 2020 interviewed 13,808 people in all EU countries.
The results differ per country. While Trump would get only 10 percent of the vote in Germany (Biden 56 percent), the current US president is ahead in Poland. However, both candidates in the neighboring country of Germany have a weak approval rating. Trump would have 38 percent in Poland, Biden 30 percent.
Little faith in American democracy
European citizens do not have much faith in American democracy. According to the study, 52 percent of all EU citizens see a system failure. In Germany, 61 percent of those questioned are of the opinion. The respondents in Poland also have a different opinion on this question. 77 percent of Poles say democracy works well in the US.
“Make America Great Again” was Trump’s slogan when he was elected four years ago. According to the survey, Europeans have their doubts. 67 percent deny that the US is “great”. Nevertheless, America is still far ahead of China as an important partner, according to EU citizens surveyed.
“Four years of Trump administration has left their mark on EU citizens. They recognize the importance of the transatlantic relationship but are sober in their assessment of what keeps them together,” said Isabell Hoffmann, study co-author. “This is also true for Poles, who – while looking for close ties to the US from historical experience – are less supportive of the current US president than at the start of his term,” said Hoffmann. According to the study, Polish citizens support the current US president – but less than at the start of his term.
