Do you work with Windows 10 and think you know the way? Then let’s see: some features are unknown even to old users. Either because they are deactivated by default or because the potential of many functions has not yet been tapped. Seven unknown but extremely useful functions at a glance:
They are especially useful for anyone who works with many open applications, windows, or in different activity areas. “For example, you can set up a work desktop and a private desktop,” says Sebastian Klöß from I.T trade association Bitkom.
Setting up an additional desktop is child’s play: just click the “button” in the lower left task bar.Active applications“and then click” New Desktop “in the top left corner. However, under” Active Applications “, all open program windows are also shown in thumbnail view at a glance.
If you haven’t turned it off, you can even scroll down and see the activities from the past few days. “Windows 10 remembers what we’ve done in the past,” says Klöß. If you specify the date, you will find the last edited Word document there, for example.
This exciting feature helps when many windows are open at once, says Klöß. If you “hold” and shake a window on the top bar with the left mouse button, you gradually minimize all other windows.
It was introduced with Windows 10 version 1809. “The feature is not activated by default and therefore remains hidden from many users,” said Jörg Hähnle, Windows non-fiction author and operator of the help portal “Paules-PC-Forum.de”. Before the update it was only possible to add exactly one element to the clipboard, now there are a maximum of 25.
However, the clipboard must be activated once by the user in the Windows settings. There you will find under “system“the institution”Clipboard“.” Clipboard history can now be activated on the right side in the section of the same name, ”explains Hähnle.
The elements can be added as usual with the key combination “Ctrl + C‘or right click and’To copy“to the shelf. With the key combination”Windows + V“Clipboard history can be viewed.” A list shows all the elements that have been saved so far, “Hähnle explains. This allows users to select the desired element and paste it again when the computer is restarted.”
“Night mode under Windows 10 reduces the blue component of the light emitted from the screen, creating a warmer color tone,” explains Hähnle. This should ensure better sleep. Night mode can also be used during the day without any problems. It can be activated by right-clicking on the desktop and then selecting “Display Settings”. There it can be found under “Color”.
There you can not only set the start and end time for the night mode, but also adjust the strength of the filter. “The first time you use night mode, it takes some getting used to,” says Hähnle. But after a few minutes, the eye got used to the picture.
If you want to write something under Windows 10, you don’t have to type. “Windows 10 makes it very easy to pronounce texts and save yourself a lot of typing,” says Hähnle. The dictation function can be used, for example, in programs such as Wordpad and can be started with the key combination “Windows + H”. Saying “End Dictation” ends the transcription.
The prerequisite, of course, is a connected microphone, with laptops usually one is integrated. But according to Hähnle you should check the texts again afterwards. Windows does not always correctly recognize all spoken words. Background noise degrades the result.
Small notes can be easily read in Windows 10 with the “Sticky NotesThe “notes” can be found in the start menu and are created with a simple mouse click, they can then be placed freely on the desktop and their size and color can be adjusted.
“Instead of sticky notes on the edge of the monitor, the notes are on the desktop,” explains Jörg Hähnle. However, the virtual notes can be browsed differently than paper post-its.
Windows 10 has practical uses in its repertoire, not only for writing and noting, but also for reading. “The texts on many internet sites are kept very small and reading longer texts can be stressful on the eyes,” says Hähnle, describing the problem.
But by holding down the Ctrl key and turning the mouse wheel, websites can be resized and enlarged. This trick basically works in all browsers. The set font size is then automatically saved for the next visit to the website. With the key combination “Ctrl + 0“the size will be reset to default.
