Nürburg (dpa) – Formula 1 is back in the Eifel after seven years. The last Grand Prix winner at the Nürburgring is Sebastian Vettel. For the eleventh race of the season on Sunday (2.10 p.m. / RTL and Sky), the name Schumacher also plays an exciting role.
Why is Formula 1 racing at the Nürburgring again?
The corona pandemic has resulted in a number of cancellations on the calendar of the motorsport premier class – from France to Singapore. In his need, Formula 1 turned to courses in Europe that can organize races with ease and are so comprehensive that the Corona regulations can be smoothly implemented. Just like the track in the Eifel, where Formula 1 was last in 2013, but was unable to pay the entry fee after that.
What weather can fans and Formula 1 entourage expect?
Up to 20,000 spectators are admitted to this Grand Prix weekend. Just like the drivers, you have to be prepared for changeable weather. “The weather always plays a role. When it’s wet, it messes up a lot. Then we can take advantage of our situation,” said Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel, who won the last Red Bull edition in 2013. On race Sunday it should be eight degrees cold right now and there is a good chance that it will rain in the afternoon. Incidentally, a race at the Nürburgring in October is nothing new: Formula 1 was already on the track in the middle of the woods in 1984 and 1995 at the beginning of October.
What does the health and hygiene concept look like?
“Every step – from arrival to the experience in the stands to departure – is organized and checked for corona protection. This too was extensively checked by the public order and health service,” assured Mirco Markfort, general manager of the Nürburgring. It all started with contactless purchase of tickets, which is only possible in a personalized and precise way. But what if the contamination warning value in the Ahrweiler district, where the trail is, shoots up? “We have a stable incidence rate. Should the values increase unexpectedly so strongly, the race itself would continue anyway. What about the spectators, should be clarified again,” said Markfort.

Is world championship leader Lewis Hamilton the favorite?
The six-time Formula 1 world champion will in any case be highly motivated. Two weeks ago, two time sentences after the illegal trial started, cost the British a certain victory in Sochi. Now Lewis Hamilton wants to celebrate his seventh victory of the season. It would be a very special one, because then he would be level with record holder Michael Schumacher with 91st Grand Prix victories. “It’s always good for Mercedes to come to Germany. We have an emotional connection with the Nürburgring,” assured Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff.
Does the name Schumacher play a big role at the Nürburgring?
Oh yeah. Michael Schumacher won five times at the Nürburgring (1995, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2006) – no other driver has been as successful as the Kerpener. Part of the route is named after him: the Schumacher-S. Next year, his son Mick wants to be promoted to Formula 1. The 21-year-old son of the record world champion will even drive in training for Alfa Romeo for the first time on Friday during a Grand Prix weekend.
